And notice these kids even do a little snipped of the Soulja-Boy dance? Even *I've* tried that!

Wonderful article! I agree with you. I am in favor of separation of church and state, in that one point of view should not be pushed above others. But it is senseless not to explore other traditions and celebrate your own, whatever it may be. Holidays are about joy, so let's celebrate, for goodness' sake.

In our house, we recognize the event of Christ's birth, but we also acknowledge the pagan solstice, with its celebration of the return of light to the earth with increasingly longer days. We also work hard to make it a season of sharing, and I want my kids to know how lucky and abundant they are by sharing what we have with others.

I meant "snippet" in my last comment, not "snipped". Sheesh. Can't even type. I wish I would have thought of doing these things when my son was small, but it just didn't occur to me. We adopted the German tradition of hanging a pickle ornament on the tree. The finder of it gets an extra present. And as an only child, he liked this quite well. With it being so very hard for my kiddo to wait until Christmas for presents, we sort of modified Hanukkah and once he got the wiggles super bad, we began with opening a present a day. I found he appreciated each one a lot more and it took the "edge off the craving".
