These days everyone is watching their budget. There are some ways to acquire knitting needles and yarn with little - or even no - money.
The Freecycle Network consists of groups around the country whose members give, and get, stuff for free in their local area. Members use email lists to post what they are giving away, and/or what they need. It’s a wonderful - and free - resource.
There are over 4,700 groups around the country. In Massachussetts there are almost 100 groups. You can join one or more groups. It’s best not to go too far afield geographically, since items have to be picked up by those who want them.
Are you looking for knitting needles? For yarn? Make a request on freecycle! A lot of people have supplies which they would love to send to a good home. Plenty of people have started knitting, and bought supplies, only to find out knitting wasn’t for them. Others have inherited yarns and needles from relatives who knit, and the recipient doesn’t know what to do with them!
You can find some great deals on Craigs List. This is where you’ll find people selling things, often at low prices.
For those who are new to cragislist, here’s how to find yarn and needles. Go to www.craigslist.com. On the right, click on the location you are interested in (there are cities, states, and countries). Then look on the left-hand side and you’ll see a box where you can “search craigslist.” Enter “knitting needles” or “yarn” in the search box, and use the pulldown menu to indicate you are looking for things “on sale.”
OTHER RESOURCES FOR INEXPENSIVE KNITTING SUPPLIES
People often sell craft supplies at yard sales. Another resource is thrift stores. Some retail stores have weekly coupons for 40% or more off of one item.
