Colleen and Jim Goff have been growing and selling hundreds of varieties of dahlias on their 5-acre property of meadows and nursery gardens for the past 20 years. After the singer-song-writer’s husband built her a bandstand under the shade of two oaks on the lawn close to their home, Colleen began asking her musician friends to share the space and the concert series was born.
Open on Sunday afternoons from 1 until 5 PM, the $15 price of admission to the concerts includes the opportunity to stroll past the vibrant dahlia beds as well as, what the Goff’s describe as, a blend of French Country, English and Native California Oak Forest Landscaping. In addition to 800 varieties of dahlias, the nursery and flower gardens display about 1000 species of other flowering plants, including an expansive collection of hydrangeas and daylilies.
Located 3-miles inland from Moss Landing and Monterey Bay at 14581 Tumbleweed Lane, Watsonville, birds from nearby Elkhorn Slough’s abundant population are frequent visitors. The property is also a certified butterfly habitat.
Where to Stay?
In addition to the numerous chain motels and upscale hostelries of Santa Cruz and the Monterey Peninsula, two unique local accommodations include the Freedom Rose House Queen Anne Victorian bed & breakfast in Watsonville and the Captain’s Inn, a former boathouse with beds crafted from actual boats at Moss Landing.
