I have written about ACORN in the past and it seems they continue to generate negative headlines. From disrupting business, intimidating employees and frightening customers, in order to pressure banks to make bad loans to marginal borrowers, (Did that not have some negative effect on our housing market recently?) to allegations, and indictments, for voter fraud, ACORN has become a “complicated” ally for the left. ACORN first drew major attention during the 2008 campaign due to their associations with President Obama and other community organizing groups. Though they claim to be non-partisan, they clearly favor left wing policies and politicians. This is their right; many groups are openly in favor of right or left policies. However, as ACORN receives large sums of federal dollars through multiple community programs, and may receive more under future legislation, issues with ACORN are issues which affect every taxpayer; it may be time for some type of review of exactly what is going on within the organization.
The issue I have is that ACORN, or its employees or volunteers are constantly involved in one scandal after the next. This latest one has to do with a video that seems to show ACORN employees conspiring to defraud the government. In the video, a man and a woman pretending to be a prostitute and her pimp are trying to figure out a way to get a house and set up there “business”. The ACORN representative then talks about ways they can get a house through various programs and begins looking through the tax code for something else they can call “prostitution” so they can write it up “legitimately”. Putting aside the libertarian argument of legalizing prostitution, if this video truly shows the entire story it is another reason to consider revoking ACORN’s their non-profit status and their ability to continue operating as a Non-Governmental Organization in the face of so many scandals.
ACORN has now fired the individuals shown in the video, but questions about ACORN remain. The video can be seen below.
