Accused pedophile, 82, needs new lawyer

An 82-year-old Montreal man arrested in the Dominican Republic two weeks ago on child porn charges is looking for a new lawyer.

His previous lawyer had announced last week that Joseph Charles Philippe Côté's request for legal aid was refused and he is withdrawing from the case.

"In view of the nature of accusations, I strongly recommended that he be represented by an attorney," said Charles Benmouyal.

Côté faces 7 charges, including importation and production of child porn and sexual contact and invitation to sexual contact involving minors. Police say they believe the alleged crimes happened in the Dominican Republic.

Crown prosecutor Rachelle Pitre had asked Côté how much time he needed to find a lawyer, so his bail hearing was put off until tomorrow.
