A school district accountant, who is accused of stuffing as much as $3.2 million dollars’ worth of kids’ lunch money in her bra over the course of seven years, has resigned from her job. Judith Oaks, 48, was caught on surveillance camera taking handfuls of cash, collected from the kids to pay for their school lunches, and stuffing the money inside her bra. She was arrested for this crime, according to CBS LA.com on Sept 27.
Police report that when they went to Oakes’ house to arrest her, they found thousands of dollars in stolen cash. They have not filed charges in this case as of yet. Oaks made $60,000 a year as the accountant for the school district.
This 25-year veteran accountant with the Rialto Unified School District resigned when the allegations of stealing came to light. Officials report that they are continuing with this investigation and while it’s reported that she allegedly got away with about $2 million, the total is now thought to be over $3 as the investigation continues.
The school district has stayed quiet on this subject until this week when they announced that they are going back through everything with a fine-tooth comb. They also said that this was allegedly the action of one person and that the school district has many fine and upstanding employees, so this should not reflect on the rest of the folks with the school district.
Rialto Police report this is the largest case of white collar crime that they’ve ever investigated. Oakes, was the main accountant for the school districts’ nutrition program. It was a supervisor within the program who suspected that something was not quite right and suspected money was missing. The prompted her to do her own investigation and apparently caught Oakes red-handed on video.
