To date, not since this blog has been posting, has there been so many low cost, amazing tastings for a Friday schedule of Portland Wine Shops. And “amazing” is an understatement. Get out there and taste wine, as there are some very unusual selections, so be sure to check out this entire posting.
What is wine for, if not to taste, learn and appreciate the creativity, craft, and expression of the soil, grapes, sun, rain and wine maker, hopefully in a screw top bottle so all the goodness comes through, and this is one stellar week in which to venture out and do just that… SO DO IT!

Russ Margach of Eyrie Vineyards and Margo Durdel of Oregon Brand Management will be pouring selections from Eyrie Vineyards, McMinnville:
“David is credited with the first plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris in the Willamette Valley. The Eyrie Vineyards, founded by David and Diana Lett in 1966, is located in the Dundee Hills. David Lett established Oregon's reputation for producing fine wine both domestically and internationally and became affectionately known as "Papa Pinot."
Eyrie Pinot Gris 2012 $16.99
“Wine Advocate calls it "a sensational value." Eyrie Pinot gris is world famous. Year after year, this is our most popular Pinot gris and one of the finest made.
Hazelnuts, lemon pie, minerals, fig, and sweet lime seduce you and call for another glass. An incredible value and our most popular Pinot gris by far. The previous vintage was sold out for months.
A weighty, dense Pinot gris that outperforms both Oregon and European versions of the wine. Made from Eyrie's four Estate vineyards, these old vine plantings produce intense, densely packed flavors.
Medium body and balanced acidity make Eyrie's Pinot gris a versatile food wine. Jason's favorite match for his Pinot gris is salmon, which shares the wine's velvety texture and subtle flavor and brings out the hints of vanilla and cedar in the wine.
Eyrie Pinot Blanc 2012 $19.99
“Winemaker David Lett was a pioneer of growing and producing Oregon's white wine grapes at his Eyrie winery in the Dundee Hills. This aromatic Pinot Blanc takes a moment to open, and rewards with bright apricot acidity, notes of orchard fruits and a long finish. A beautifully crafted wine. Serve with savory soufflés, muenster cheese, with mild fish or light soups.
Eyrie Chardonnay 2012 $25.99
“Discover why Eyrie Chardonnays earned the position of “Best New World White” from Stephen Spurrier. organizer of the famous Judgement in Paris. Long aging potential is the focus of this selection from the oldest Chardonnay vines in the Willamette Valley
Black Cap Rose 2011 $21.99
“This wine was made from a blend of 93% Pinot noir and 7% Pinot Meunier, both grown on volcanic soils in the Northern Willamette Valley. A rounded palate from barrel fermentation couples with subtle floral undertones on the nose for a light, refreshing version of Pinot. It is a perfect addition to your Holiday meal
Eyrie Pinot Noir 2011 $31.99
“Elegant, delicate, lovely pinot. This is definitely the best 2011 WV pinot I've tasted thus far. It is a pale ruby, almost rose like. The nose is lovely with floral notes, bright cherry, damp leaves, and hints of black tea. The palate is light, lively, and very pleasant. This is a delicate and elegant form of pinot, clearly showing the lighter weights of the vintage, but it is quite enjoyable. Eyrie continues to put out fantastic pinot year in and year out.
Black Cap Pinot Noir 2010 $44.99
“Familiar with Eyrie Vineyards? This is winemaker Jason Lett's private label. Beautifully sums up the 2010 vintage in my eyes: rich dark aromas of mocha, sassafras and vanilla, silky smooth with great body, ripe juicy berries on the palate, absolutely perfect!
From the Eyrie newsletter:
“BlackCap is a label that Jason had started before coming back to Eyrie as winemaker in 2005. He brought the label into the Eyrie fold and has continued to use it as a way to explore grape growing around the valley, off the Eyrie estate vineyard properties. “
And there may be a mystery wine at Dave's desk...

A VINOUS VISIT FROM ROUGE BLEU & BANNERET $10) Friday, March 14th/ 4-7:30 @ Mt Tabor Fine Wines
”Just about a year ago we hosted Jean-Marc Espinasse, proprietor of Domaine Rouge Bleu and nephew of Jean-Claude Vidal, owner of Domaine Du Banneret. Jean-Marc has since moved his family to Provence and is working on setting up another winery in that area. Meanwhile, at Rouge Bleu, Caroline Jones and her husband have moved onto the property. They have set up a delightful B&B on the grounds and Caroline has taken over day to day winemaking duties at the winery. We’ll be offering a tasty flight of wines from both estates. Six of the seven wines come from the two of them and we’ll be starting with a tasty Rhone white from their friends over at Mas De Libian. This week we’ll be surrounded by women as Libian is also the domaine of a very talented female.
Hope you all can join us to welcome these talented young women to Portland. We’re certainly lucky as they will only visit seven cities on their American visit.”

March 14, 2013
“I have to admit that this past week when I wasn’t pondering the wines to be showing off this Friday at our epic Syrah Fest, that I have been rather engrossed in the happenings in Ukraine. Like him or hate him, that Putin is one guy who could give a rip what the world thinks. Now I know his hubris will come back to bite him in the a** sooner or later, but until then (and I promise I’ll get to the wine in a minute), we’ll play a little game called “What is Vladimir saying/thinking”. Match the quotes with the pic that best suits it….
How does a whole lotta syrah sound? Better than me spending time looking up pictures of Putin, I’ll tell you. So syrah it is, and I have to say I have found examples of this most delicious grape from around the world. In fact from six different growing regions around the world! This is an evening of nothing-not-to-like red wine, and these rich, dark, spicy reds are just the thing as grills get fired up across this great city of ours. Check them out and make plans for future pleasures!”
-2010 ARANCIO Syrah Sicilia (Italy) $9.95

-2012 JIM BARRY Shiraz “Lodge Hill” (Australia) $19.95…90 pts-Wine Spectator & Wine Advocate
