Access to care in Durham NC

Access to HIV Care In Durham NC

This article is geared towards helping those who are in need of services related to HIV testing and
care. In Durham NC there are many hospitals and testing sites throughout the county. The
Raleigh/Durham area is also home to many of the top notch research companies which focus on HIV. It
is also a place where eventually a cure may be found for the HIV virus. With all of the research and
hospitals in and around Durham NC it is a bit surprising that Durham itself has a very high rate of new HIV
infection. There are testing sites throughout the city which specialize in rapid testing but there are also
many social barriers that hinder folks to actually receive care. This city although having many positive
a factor also has a problem with poverty in many areas. In impoverished areas throughout the county it
is difficult to access care or even a computer for that matter. Despite the continued efforts to educate
the general populations in Durham NC about the need for HIV testing, new infections continue to rise.

This may sound like doom and gloom however there is a positive twist. If someone does happen to
become HIV positive or actually diagnosed with an opportunistic infection due to AIDS, it is probably the
best place to be. The hospitals in Durham and Chapel Hill are some of the best in the country. The
Veterans Hospital is also located in the city of Durham and serves many HIV positive veterans who live
in the city. The VA provides medications to treat HIV and charges a very small copay. This in itself
obviously beats the alternative. Duke and UNC hospitals are also located conveniently in and around
Durham and have some of the best doctors in the United States practicing there. So, hopefully in the
near future a cure may be found for this virus but until then, researchers in the Raleigh/Durham area
will diligently pursue a cure. Until then all we can do is what and see and educate the best we can. Here
