A representative for the Oscars insists that First Lady Michelle Obama was the “only person” in the White House to view the contents of the envelope that contained the name of the Best Picture Oscar winner, TMZ reported on Feb. 25.
Many found it unbelievable, “practically inconceivable” that any package, even a high-profile Oscar envelope, would reach the First Lady without someone opening it and going over the envelope with a fine tooth comb.
The representative for the Academy issued this statement:
“First Lady Michelle Obama was the first and only person to open the Best Picture envelope. PwC [PricewaterhouseCoopers] accountants are the only individuals who have knowledge of the results prior to their live reveal on the Oscars.”
But the American public is skeptical. How can an envelope, even one purported to contain the name of the winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, make its way into the White House without one single Secret Service agent opening it to ensure the envelope did not contain anything harmful to the president and his family. The revelation that the First Lady was the only one to open the Best Picture Oscar envelope leaves Americans wondering what else could slip past security disguised as an important document meant only for the eyes of President Obama or First Lady Michelle Obama.
TMZ spoke to the Secret Service on Feb. 25, and the only reply TMZ received was, “We’re not gonna comment on that.”
