Academy Awards nominations have been released: Many honored, a few notable snubs

Right on the heels of the Golden Globe awards comes the announcement for Academy Award nominations. With award season in full swing, the New York Daily News reported on Jan. 16 that there are a few surprises on the list this year.

"American Hustle" and "Gravity" already are winners, both movies have netted 10 nominations each. "12 Years A Slave" also picked up it's fair share of nominations.

Jennifer Lawrence is up for Best Supporting Actress in "American Hustle." If she wins again this year, she will make history as the youngest actress with two trophies at only 23-years old.

If "American Hustle" nets as many Oscars as experts expect, this will make director David O. Russell the "it" guy in Hollywood. Having won multiple awards last year for "Silver Linings Playbook" as well as a few more in 2010 for "The Fighter" he will have made his mark as an incredibly successful and celebrated Hollywood director.

Of course there are always the Academy Award snubs too. Many great movies, actors and actresses seem to have been overlooked this year but it has been noted. Many expected to see Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey and Robert Redford on the list this year. They all did amazing work and it seems, were forgotten.

Ellen Degeneres will be hosting the Academy Awards this year. They will air live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
