The Museum of Modern Art in New York City has an interesting exhibit that will randomly appear throughout 2013. Tilda Swinton, the 2007 Best Actress Academy award winner for “Michael Clayton,” will sleep in a glass box as part of a performance piece called “The Maybe.”
The Gothamist.com reported on March 24 that Swinton, who starred in a David Bowie video, will randomly appear at MoMa throughout 2013. According to the report, museum staff will not know when Swinton is coming until the day she arrives. When Swinton does arrive to appear in “The Maybe” performance piece she will remain there all day with only cushions to sleep on and a water jug.
The Museum of Modern Art issued this statement regarding Tilda Swinton sleeping in a glass box in “The Maybe” performance piece:
"An integral part of The Maybe's incarnation at MoMA in 2013 is that there is no published schedule for its appearance, no artist's statement released, no museum statement beyond this brief context, no public profile or image issued. Those who find it chance upon it for themselves, live and in real—shared—time: now we see it, now we don't."
Tilda drew lots of attention from museum goers on Saturday. Instagram user wmuangsaen posted fuzzy photo of what appears to be James Franco taking in the Swinton exhibit, saying:
“just saw tilda swinton sleeping in a box…with james franco staring at her right in front of us. My life changed…@pprae @kimpp
Gallerinaoffduty, another Instagram user, posted photos of Tilda Swinton in the glass box at the Museum of Modern Art, including an updated placard that is posted on the exhibit.
“The Maybe,” conceived by Tilda Swinton, was first performed in London in 1995 at the Serpentine Gallery. Swinton asked artist Cornelia Parker to collaborate on the performance piece. The Museo Barracco in Rome has also hosted Swinton’s “The Maybe” performance piece.
