Academy Award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, 46, found dead

Reports are coming out of New York City that Academy Award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead, this morning, by a friend, in his apartment. The news originally was reported by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Daily News. The news has since been picked up by most news agencies. The most recent story, out of the New York Post, is that a source from the police department is saying the actor was found with a needle in his arm and that he died from a drug overdose.

Hoffman was nominated for four Academy Awards. He was nominated, and won, Best Actor as the titular role in the movie Capote in 2005. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2007 for a role in the movie Charlie Wilson’s War. He got another nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2008 for his role in Doubt. He got his fourth nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2012 for his role in The Master.

Hoffman entered rehab in 2013 reportedly to overcome heroin abuse. He had been frank that he had battled various forms of addiction in the past.

Most recently Hoffman had been back on the big screen as Plutarch Heavensbee in the smash hit Catching Fire and had been filming in the role for the third movie in the series - Mockingjay.

In addition to his film roles, Hoffman was also a regular star on broadway in a variety of plays. He won accolades playing Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman in 2012. He also had numerous television roles, especially early in his career. He was also a director of plays and was set to direct a film later in 2014.
