The 2013 Oscars is shaping up to be an amazing TV event this year. On Jan. 30, ABC officials announced that Barbra Streisand has agreed to perform during this year’s Academy Awards. The last time Streisand performed at the Oscars was 36 years ago when she sang “Evergreen” from “A Star Is Born” at the 1977 Oscars.
“In an evening that celebrates the artistry of movies and music,” said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, “how could the telecast be complete without Barbra Streisand? We are honored that she has agreed to do a very special performance on this year’s Oscars, her first time singing on the show in 36 years.”
Barbra Streisand picked up her first Oscar in 1969 for her Best Actress performance in “Funny Girl.” She won her second Academy Award in 1977 for Best Original Song for “Evergreen” from “A Star Is Born.” The powerhouse actress and singer also was nominated for an Oscar in 1974 for her performance in “The Way We Were,” in 1991 for “The Prince of Tides,” and in 1996 for co-writing the original song, “I Finally Found Someone” from “The Mirror Has Two Faces.” In addition, Streisand has won eight Grammy Awards, four Emmy Awards and a Tony Award. She has been married to James Brolin for 14 years
Barbra Streisand first appeared on television in 1961, when she was a guest on the “Jack Parr Show.” She made seven one-hour TV specials: “My Name is Barbra” (1965), “Color Me Barbra” (1966), “The Belle of 14th Street” (1967), “A Happening in Central Park” (1968), “Barbra Streisand and Other Musical Instruments” (1973), “Putting It Together: The Making of the Broadway Album” (1986), and “One Voice” (1986). One of her most memorable TV moments was a performance of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at the 2001 Emmy Awards, which aired less than two months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Barbra last appeared on TV on Dec. 23, 2012 when she spoke to Piers Morgan about “The Guilt Trip.”
During the 2012 Oscars, Barbra Streisand talked about the magic of movies during a pre-filmed mini-documentary. “I could dream there. I could become anything I want. I could be part of the film. I could dream about my own future,” she stated during the 84th Annual Academy Awards.
Oscars for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented at the 2013 Academy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre, and will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.
