The Academy Award nominations were announced. There were surprises for newcomers and snubs for industry veterans. Oprah Winfrey was noticeably absent from the list of nominees. Tom Hanks did not receive a nomination his role as Captain Phillips but newcomer Barkhad Abdi stole the spotlight and earned a nod from the Academy.

Gravity and American Hustle lead the pack with 10 nominations in major categories. 12 Years A Slave earned 9 nominations. Congrats to all of the nominees!
