This article is about Albany area dogs, not Albany area cats. It is the happy ending (almost) story about abused pit bulls found in an abandoned trailer a month ago in the cold. All they need now are homes. Often cat people are also dog people. If not, you may know a dog person who needs a friend.
After three weeks at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, pit bulls Gavin and Neve seem right at home.
While they've no doubt found comfort in their new surroundings, Humane Society staff are now hoping to find the dogs new owners.
Along with two others, the pair was found cold and emaciated inside an abandoned U-Haul late last month outside an Albany motel. It's believed their owner, Anthony Walker, was breeding them to make a profit.
"When they're just looking at dogs as a place to get some profit, they're not looking at them as beings who need to be cared for. What happens is, they end up in these kinds of conditions," said Brad Shear, Mohawk Hudson Humane Society Executive Director.
While Gavin and Neve are available for adoption now, Shear says Archer, who was in the worst shape when the four dogs were found, should be ready to move into his new home by early next week.
"It took them about 12 hours to get his body temperature back up to normal, he was all skin and bones and I have doubts whether he would have survived the night," said Shear.
A fourth dog, who recently gave birth to puppies, is currently living in a foster home and should be ready for adoption in about six weeks.
Whether you're looking for a playful pup like Neve, or cuddly lap dogs like Archer and Gavin, Shear believes the Humane Society has the right dog for your family.
"We've been taking care of these dogs for three weeks so a lot of people around here have gotten very attached to them, the volunteers and the staff and a lot of people are going to be happy to see them go home," said Shear.
