Abused dog Herbie has died (Photos)

The loveable dog from Lorain who captured the nation’s heart has passed away.

Fox8.com reported Friday that Herbie passed away at about 2 p.m. on March 1, 2013.

"Doc" Rick Broz, who has been caring for Herbie, was with the sweet dog when he passed. A heartbroken Doc says on the Facebook page “Justice for Herbie”:

This is the hardest message I have ever had to post. Herbie has gone to the bridge. He fought hard to recover from his abuse, but the cancer was too much for him to bear.

Herbie’s health had been declining the past few days, according to Doc. He was still drinking water but had stopped eating and was losing weight.

Doc intends to take some time away from the Facebook page for Herbie in order to mourn. He states:

These last two weeks with him were very hard on me, watching this magnificent animal begin to waste away from the dog he had become under Dr. Woods care and my love. I did not wish to see him start to suffer. In his way, he told me yesterday that he was ready to leave us. I told Dr. Woods of my wishes and he agreed that it was time.

Doc appreciates all the love poured out for Herbie:

I know that if he could talk, he would tell all of you how much he loved each and everyone of you and you were the reason he was able to fight for so long.

When found on December 2, 2012, Herbie had a fractured skull and he was so weak, he couldn't even walk on his own. Then just when it seemed that the brave dog was starting to get better, he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a non-operable form of cancer.

If you wish to leave your condolences, please go to the Facebook page set up for Herbie.

You were loved by many, Herbie, and you will be missed.
