Absorbing Pete Carroll's wisdom: Trick plays

While Notre Dame head coach, Charlie Weis, was not able to get the better of the Trojans last Saturday when it was all said and done, he was, however, able to get the better of them on a fake field goal attempt.

The trick play that Weis employed, in which Irish wideout Robby Parris appeared to be running off the field on a field goal, is a play with which Pete Carroll is all too familiar.

“Yeah, well, we've used the play before. Do you remember who that was against,” asked Carroll?  “It was Washington a few years ago. And on the same weekend Oregon used the same play. We both picked it up from the NFL. Somebody had run it a couple of weeks earlier, and we both scored touchdowns on it.”

So if this play was so successful in scoring touchdowns, why haven't we seen it since? Fortunately Carroll was once again able to give us the lowdown on this field goal trickery.

“We [USC and Oregon] had memos from the league office that said we could no longer run that play because it was intent to deceive. So the play went on the shelf,” said Carroll. “The Pac 10 wasn't going to allow that. Our Pac 10 officials allowed that, so I don't know what to tell you.”

That is all fine and dandy, but there were Pac-10 officials at the game against Notre Dame on Saturday, why was it allowed?

“It was an intersectional game as somebody pointed out,” explained Carroll. “I don't know if the Pac 10 officials jurisdiction, I don't even know what to tell you. I don't know what the answer is to this.”

Fair enough Coach. Notre Dame probably figured it needed all the help it could get given the outcomes of the past seven games. Can you really blame them?
