The debut trailer for the new romantic comedy The One I Love was just released today, courtesy of its distributor, RADiUS-TWC. The film premiered last January at the Sundance Film Festival and received some glowing reviews from several critics. The trailer comes only one day after the official poster dropped (see above).
The film follows Ethan (Mark Duplass) and Sophie (Elisabeth Moss), a couple who are on the verge of splitting up. Their marriage counselor (Ted Danson) encourages them to go to a special retreat to reinvigorate their marriage. The strange events that take place at this retreat, well, those should be left to the imagination until you actually watch the film. The trailer is smart not to give away any details.
The Duplass brothers’ films have a low-rent indie form of dialogue which can become a little grating at times, and although this film has a different writer and director than their other productions, there are still traces of Mumblecore lurking in this new trailer. That apprehension aside, hiring a new writer and director seems like a smart idea for the Duplass boys. Hopefully the new blood will add a new dynamic to their shop-worn indie aesthetic.
If the trailer looks at all interesting to you, you are encouraged not to read up on the film beforehand. More than one critic has already ruined the script’s clever approach. So, if you were upset that some spastic critic spoiled The Truman Show for you, or are still peeved that your dear friend told you Bruce Willis was dead in The Sixth Sense (whoops, spoiler warning), then your are encouraged to take on The One I Love with a fresh palette.
The One I Love will open for a limited release on August 15. If you’d like to catch the film before then, it will screen at the Traverse City Film Festival on July 30. For more information on the film, check out it’s Facebook page or follow the official Twitter account for the film.
