It’s a moment of truth or perhaps a burgeoning enlightenment. How does an abortionist just stop?
Dr. Anthony Levatino performed abortions in his private practice for eight years. He would go from telling a worried mother that yes; there is a heartbeat … to piecing the body of an aborted baby together to make sure all the parts were out of the mother. Going through infertility with his wife while aborting so many babies created great conflict. “We started desperately looking for a baby to adopt, and I was throwing them in the garbage at the rate of nine and ten a week. It even occurred to me then: I wish one of these people would just let me have their child. But it doesn't work that way.” Dr. Levatino kept on as OB/GYN/Abortionist until it all came to a breaking point on one horrid day when his adopted daughter was killed by a car. Facing his own personal loss, he couldn’t go on as an abortionist.
In November 1987, the Pro-Life Action League held its first “Meet the Abortion Providers” Conference, where Dr. Levatino first told his story. Last year this physician was the MC at the same conference, as other medical workers, former abortion counselors and others affiliated with this industry shared their conversion from being actively pro-choice to staunch pro-life. Each speaker had a personal story of how they got involved with abortions, and when they realized the truth of their actions.
Just ask Abby Johnson about the truth of working for an abortion clinic. A volunteer for Planned Parenthood for six years, she became Director for the infamous abortion mill for two years. Her intent was to educate women about family planning, not necessarily promote abortion. When Johnson assisted with an abortion for the first time and saw the baby “crumple” as he was vacuumed out of the womb, her pro-abortion stance crumpled, too. Now she’s an advocate for life, convincing others to leave an industry wrought with the blood of the innocent.
In a recent blog for Life News.com, Johnson shared an email from a former abortionist who worked for Planned Parenthood. “I became hardened and cold to the fact, I was killing children. How I, a physician who had taken an oath to preserve life can perform abortions — can actually kill defenseless unborn babies — literally ripped out, many times in pieces, from the mother’s womb, is beyond me...but I see it now. Partial-birth abortions was my living.” This physician was handed a pro-life tract, and after reading it became angry. In a moment of epiphany, she could not do any more abortions. “I felt like, for every baby I had taken from this world, a part of me died as well.”
Faith convictions abound among former abortion workers on all levels. Carol Everett owned two abortion clinics and ran four from 1977 to 1983. Now she exposes the reality of what happens, the motivation of greed and how her “religious transformation” gave her the strength to stop. Now she’s a voice for life, educating others and working against those who profit from fear.
Some abortionists say it was simply part of their medical training. Others admit to the greed. Most all of those who came out of the abortion business to stand up for life came to a point of realization and were suddenly horrified at the babies lost by their hand. Former abortionist, McArthur Hill, M.D., says, "I am a murderer. I have taken the lives of innocent babies and I have ripped them from their mother's wombs with a powerful vacuum machine."
In the forty years since Roe vs. Wade made abortion legal, over 55 million babies have been aborted.
"I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself. And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? ... By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her problems. And, by abortion, that father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. The father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion just leads to more abortion. Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.” ~ Mother Theresa
