Democrats are responding to the GOP attack on women's rights. Tuesday Senate Dems announced they would continue to support abortion rights despite the fact that House Republicans are working overtime trying to restrict if not eliminate access to safe and legal abortions.
Politico explains that the two bills are similar in substance although the Smith version is more far-reaching. While the Pitts’s legislation is specific to abortion-related provisions of the health reform law, the Smith proposal would go after any federal funds that could touch abortion.
In addition, Mike Pence of Indiana would prohibit federal funds for any organization that provides abortions, cutting off $317 million in federal funding to family-planning groups that offer abortion as part of their women's reproductive health care.

There is nothing on the face of this that restricts any woman's right to choose to have an abortion.
The restrictions appear mostly to be that they should not expect the government to fund those abortions.
So, your headline is a lie. The attack is not on a woman's choice to have an abortion, it is an attack on the idea that government is somehow financially responsible.
This is common sense legislation. The federal government should not be in the abortion/health care business.
No lies about it. Read the links, you illiterate prat. "A new bill introduced by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA), H.R. 358 or the "Protect Life Act," would allow a hospital the right to refuse to perform emergency abortions when necessary to save the life of the woman."
This does not infringe upon a woman's right to choose, you stupid twit, it merely allows the hospital to opt out of a potential tort.
Is this news or is this opinion? This is the liberal media conservatives always talk about.
Yours are the CON-Man Servitor lies that liberals always talk about.
I don't know what lies you are talking about. Stop resorting to ad hominem attacks like your fellow liberal Will S. My only point is that this article is not news, it is a call to action. It is written for liberals to confirm their pre-existing positions. Try taking a critical look at "news" articles before just falling in line. I love how the links are not to the actual bill but to other articles written by the same "journalist." BTW, I am a libertarian supportive of a woman's right to choose, so don't go on writing a lengthy response accusing me of being some ultra conservative. I am anything but. I just get annoyed when I see "news" like this show up on Google's main news page because this is not really objective news. If I want slanted news I will read the Huffington Post or the Drudge Report.
well, he is called the Democrat Examiner. If you want the other point of view read the hundreds of conservative Examiners. Don't know how he hit so high on Google news but good luck to him. Mostly he's just digesting recent news on the subject.
NO! Woman should have the right to kill their kids up to the age of 18. Come on, lets be real.
I am a woman, I am liberal, and I am for the most part, opposed to abortion.
But the GOP has been incredibly out of line and unprepared. Having to define "forcible" rape was the most disgusting thing I've seen come out of the House in years. And then the attempt to rename "rape victims" to "rape accusers"... its pathetic and disgusting. Its a slap in the face to women.
I totally support no federal funding to ELECT abortions. As for the others, I understand how you guys feel, but taking these steps just makes the GOP look awful. Not to mention they shot down efforts to close the gender gap in salaries.
Its really coming off as a bunch of white male a-holes that dont give a shit about women and still wished they could force the bible on them to make them "submit".
Its dirty politics.
Google Alert: "republican controlled state legislatures"
We blog as the tea-drinking elephant is trampling the U.S. Constitution, LGBT, Woman's Rights, Education, Health Care, the Environment and, well, (President Reagan) this is not your father's GOP.
Senator Franken, Mr. President, how may we help? You aren't invited to their party either.
Mr. Michael Stone, I Thank you!
