Abolition Conference calls for an end to modern day slavery

On Saturday, January 14, 2012 the Soroptimists International of Desert Tucson is sponsoring a conference to combat human trafficking.

The Abolition conference is aimed at raising awareness about the devastating practice of sex traffic and is Tucson's first-ever regional conference on the subject. Soroptimists around the world are working to end the enslavement of women and girls, and in Tucson this event will run from 8:30 a.m to 4:00 p.m. at the UA Student Union Ballroom.

The conference serves to educate the public about sex trafficking on a local, national and global scale. Attendees will meet a range of people and organizations who are fighting against sex trafficking.

Consisting of workshops, speakers and exhibitors, the conference offers smaller sessions that specifically target particular interests such as law enforcement officials, representatives of the judicial system, faith groups, university students, and non-governmental organizations, arts and media.

Sponsoring organizations for the Abolition Conference include: Southern Arizona Against Slavery, Streetlight Tucson, the University of Arizona Honors College and Soroptimist International of Desert Tucson.

In their quest to end slavery, Soroptimists use a multi-dimensional approach that includes raising awareness, assisting victims, preventing slavery from happening in the first place, and advocating for better laws and enforcement.
