Abney Park is a band that many in the steampunk fandom will recognize immediately. Since the release of their 2008 album Lost Horizons, the band has come to identify fully with a pervasive steampunk theme throughout all of their music. The band had released music in the goth/industrial scene before, but it was Lost Horizons that connected the group to the steampunk scene. Abney Park has released three steampunk albums to date (Lost Horizons, Aether Shanties, and The End of Days) Popular songs include “Airship Pirates”, “Throw Them Overboard” and “Victorian Vigilante.” Each of these songs tells a story and paints a picture of an entire steampunk world full of sky pirates, mad scientists, and maverick inventions.
Now steampunks will be able to see the full spectrum of the world created by Abney Park's music. The band is releasing a core rulebook for a tabletop role-playing game called Airship Pirates in addition to a supplemental adventure called Ruined Empires. The game will allow players to create and play their own characters in the rich world made vivid by the band's music. The books provide illustrations, maps, and charts for players to immerse themselves in a wholly steampunk tabletop experience (much like a game of Dungeons and Dragons). Contributing writers and artists from all around the world have striven to make the game accessible to RPG newcomers and veterans alike with an emphasis on the multi-cultural nature of the setting.
The core rulebook and adventure book are available for pre-order through Abney Park's web market. The titles will ship in August.
