According to www.divinggrandprixgatineau.com, Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Jennifer Abel won a gold medal at the FINA World Cup diving competition in Gatineau, Quebec on Sunday. Abel, who teamed with Pamela Ware of Greenfield Park, Quebec posted a score of 322.71 points to win the women's 3m synchronized diving springboard competition.

Abel and Ware were 17.01 points better than Chunting Wu and Quling Zheng of China. Even though Wu and Zheng do not have a strong track record in international diving, the gold medal for Abel and Ware should be a huge boost going forward for them in their athletic careers knowing that they defeated divers from a very strong diving nation in China. The American duo of Maren Taylor and Deidre Freeman won the bronze medal with a score of 286.80 points.

Abel now has Ware as her synchronized diving partner after she won a bronze medal with Emile Heymans of St. Lambert, Quebec in the women's 3m synchronized springboard competition at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Heymans has since retired from diving.

Abel and Ware's greatest accomplishment to date are winning the bronze medal in the women's 3m synchronized springboard competition at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Ware also came home with a bronze medal in the women's 3m individual springboard diving competition.

Overall, Canada came away with five medals from the competition in Gatineau. Abel also won a silver medal in the women's 3m springboard, while Olympic bronze medalists Rosaline Filion of Laval, Quebec and Meghan Benefito of Montreal won two medals each. Filion and Benefito won a silver medal in the synchronized platform, while Filion and Benefito won a silver and bronze respectively in the women's platform.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Canada is once again expected to send an experienced diving team. It will be interesting to see how much momentum Ware, Abel, Filion and Benefito are able to generate from their positive results in Gatineau, Quebec this weekend.
