ABC put the pilot episode of ”Bad Management” on their website and app on Dec. 12, 2013. ”Bad Management” is a not that funny workplace comedy (spoiler alert) which takes a character similar to Catherine Tate's character from “The Office”, Nellie Betram, and matches it with David Spade's tired old persona. Irish actress Sharon Horgan, who essentially wrote and produced the pilot, plays Eve who is in charge of the luxury goods department of fictitious department store Eastmore's. The only major difference from Eve and Nellie Betram is that Eve apparently can't tell jokes. Instead of a witty repartee the viewer is left with a scene of her searching the internet for a comeback joke and Spade retorting that her joke isn't good.
Eve's chief rival is Tobias Eastmore Jr (David Spade) who is the son of the owner and was an underling but during the pilot gets promoted to head the Electronics department. This is Spade's standard stock character of snarky rich kid womanizer who has success from his father.
The episode starts off with Eve tricking an employee played by beloved character actress Georgia Engel into attending her surprise retirement party. The scene was so awkward that the owner of the store played by Alan Thicke commented on it.
Eve's next assignment is to replace the retired employee and she interviews Mel (Greta Lee) who is too sexy for her. Tobais Jr. of course poaches Mel and hires her to work in his department. Mel has success selling gadgets and Eve goes out and gets a boy toy of her own.
The cast is rounded out by a stock gay character (E.J. Bonilla) and clerk Linda (Rachael Harris). Neurotic Linda is kind of funny when the joke isn't racist which was pointed out by Eve.
ABC has not made an official decision on the fate of the show.
