ABC's 'Lost' recap: Locke shows us the numbers

If you ask someone what one of their most baffling "Lost" mysteries is, more often than not they will mention the numbers. 4 8 15 16 23 42 -- these six numbers have served as the frustration for many of the show's fans over the course of the past five-plus seasons.

On Tuesday night, we finally got our answer behind their existence: they are each representative of a person "sent" to the island. It was difficult to catch whose number exactly was attached to whom, but I would be willing to bet that these six numbers correspond perfectly to the Oceanic Six.

Out of all of the people to discover this secret, Sawyer was easily one of the more interesting choices since he really doesn't care about doing the "heroic" thing. Accompanied by his new friend / foe Evil Locke, Sawyer was handed the opportunity to "leave the island" after looking at the number. Of course, following this moment was the all-too-familiar end of the episode.

It would be a lie if I said, though, that this episode was about Sawyer in the slightest. It was really about John Locke and the man he ends up becoming in the "alternate universe" away from the island. As it turns out, life isn't so good: the guy loses his job, fights with his wife, tries his luck with some odd jobs, and refuses to call Jack's business card simply because he doesn't believe in hope. Really it was just nice to see the "real" Locke again in comparison to the possessed guy we're seeing roaming around the island. Evil Locke is a tough character to grasp onto simply because we're still learning about his motivations.

There were some interesting character moments in the episode -- such as Hurley showing up as John's boss and Ben appearing as a teacher -- that all work to suggest that these people are all destined to interact even if they are far away from the island.

The one theme we're seeing here, though, is that the lives of these people weren't exactly going to be Heaven if their plane had landed in Los Angeles; rather, they would be just as miserable as they were beforehand.
