ABC's 'Lost' recap: a sad sunflower and 'Tina Fey'

This "alternate universe" on ABC's "Lost" is quickly turning into a game of polar opposites. For evidence, all you have to do is look at Tuesday night's episode. In the present world, Sawyer is one of the most infamous con men around. However, without the island he somehow manages to turn into a cop. That doesn't mean that he undergoes a complete 180, though -- one of his driving forces from his past life (revenge) is still there.

In this "the plane crash never happened" world, Sawyer the cop works with Miles as his partner -- not only that, but he also manages to get a date with Charlotte! What transpired was actually one of the most believable relationships I've seen in a while. Sawyer blew it on the first date by flipping out when Charlotte saw photos of the "other" Sawyer, Anthony Cooper (the one he got his nickname from) -- and then she wouldn't take him back when he showed up at her door with the most pathetic-looking sunflower. Hooray for her!

In the end, Miles confronted Sawyer about his "trip to Australia" after speaking with Charlotte, which was really a mission to hunt down Cooper. Then, right in the middle of the conversation, Kate rudely interrupted it by wrecking a car and forcing a chase. There was a nice moment against the fence, and then we were back from the alternate world.

In the end, I see how "Lost" is trying to show how Jacob's influence has changed these people's lives, but I don't think Sawyer's story worked as well as Ben's last week simply because he felt like the exact same character with a police uniform. We were told his life was different, but it was hard to completely believe it.

On the island, meanwhile, Sawyer's plan to "help out" evil Locke by traveling out to a new island and looking around the wreckage for survivors. As is the case on this show more often than not, it was a set-up -- designed primary so that he would confront Charles Widmore (and apparently also meet a woman who looks just like Tina Fey). Sawyer told Charles that he would lead Locke to him on one condition: he wouldn't harm anyone that he wanted to save and they would be allowed to leave the island without a problem. Widmore agreed, but then Sawyer threw a curveball into the mix -- he went and told Locke about it.

In the end, we learned something this episode that we've pretty much known all along: Sawyer is looking out for himself. He has devised a master plan to have him and Kate off the island in the submarine while Widmore and Locke spend the entire time fighting amongst themselves.

Outside of that, this episode didn't necessarily push us forward as much as some episodes have this season. We had a nice Claire / Kate moment, but some of the other major storylines (like with Jack and Ben) were gone this week for Sawyer's story. (I guess Sayid can't kill people in the temple every week.)
