ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" finale extravaganza kicked off the festivities this evening with the final three contestants performing two of four dance routines, in the first phase of the two night competition.

Tonight, every dance step was crucial. Each routine must be perfect in these final hours of the Dancing with the Stars competition. There were no perfect dance routines this evening, thus no perfect scores were awarded by the judges on the first night of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" finale.

With the Dancing with the Stars championship so close at hand the contestants were taking some pretty hefty risks, in the hope of gaining favor with the judges, and the viewers at home as well. These risks led to a few mistakes, some of these mistakes cost the Dancing with the Stars finalists dearly.

Erin Andrews and pro partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy's free style dance routine was described  as a "physco drama unfolding". Parts of the routine were incredible, but a little stumble across the bed led to a low score for the two Dancing with the Stars finalists.

Nicole Scherzinger and pro partner, Derek Hough took the biggest risk of all, combining many dance styles together for their free style routine. Lindy Hop, Salsa and Jive were so well choreographed that the judges forgave a very obvious missed lift, awarding the couple a high score.

Evan Lysacek and professional partner, Anna Trebunskaya, could not come to an agreement on a routine for their free style. Evan wanted something spectacular. Something that the Dancing with the Stars judges had not seen before. The chosen routine left the judges bewildered. They were not sure if they were watching "Footloose", or watching someone with a "screw loose".

On a more positive note, Evan and Anna's Viennese Waltz was amazing, described as a "beautiful, emotional, endless enchanting dream". Nicole and Derek's Rumba was mesmerizing. "Eroticism and romance woven into a dance of sheer beauty", and Erin and Max's Samba was said to be "hotter than noon in the tropics."

The first night of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" finale was wonderful. Tomorrow night promises to be just as exciting. Two additional dance routines, culminating in the announcement of the Dancing with the Stars "Mirror Ball" trophy winner. It all starts at 8/7 central on ABC.

Dancing with the Stars finale leader board:

1. Erin Andrews and DWTS professional partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy - 55 points
Nicole Scherzinger and DWTS professional partner, Derek Hough - 55 points

2. Evan Lysacek and DWTS professional partner, Anna Trebunskaya - 52 points
