ABC City Guides for Kids names the Top 7 Family Destinations for 2012

With spring break just around the corner, and summer vacation planning not too far behind, ABC City Guides for Kids has released its annual Top 7 Family Destinations list.

  1. Pittsburgh, PA – Ride the Duquesne Incline, a cable car ride high above the city, for a bird’s eye view of the three rivers.  Visit Primanti Bros., the National Aviary, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium and Kennywood Park.  Other attractions include the Heinz History Center and the Carnegie Science Center.
  2. Atlantic City, NJ – Much more than casinos, families can visit the Absecon Lighthouse, Steel Pier and Historic Gardner’s Basin, home to the Atlantic City Aquarium/Ocean Life Center, fishing charters, dolphin-watching tours and much more.  Kids of all ages love the fun, freaky and fascinating exhibits at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum.  Enjoy salt water taffy on America’s first Boardwalk or go to the beach.  Visit Tony’s for great pizza and theother White House for a sub sandwich.
  3. Times Square, New York – See the Gazillion Bubble Show on Broadway, ride the Giant Ferris Wheel inside Toys-R-Us and visit the Hershey and M&M super stores.  At the end of the day, grab a seat on the red steps in Father Duffy Square and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Crossroads of the World.
  4. Chicago, IL – Plan a summer visit during the Taste of Chicago Festival.  Schedule plenty of time for the Museum Campus, Navy Pier, the Art Institute and a stroll down Michigan Avenue.  Lincoln Park Zoo, Lake Michigan and Wrigley Field are also mandatory stops while in Chicago.
  5. Philadelphia, PA – Start at the Rocky statue and race to the top of the Art Museum steps.  Stop by the Franklin Institute and Mummers Museum, eat at Geno’s or Pat’s in South Philly or go to a Phillies game.
  6. Louisville, KY – The Louisville Slugger Museum may have the best “factory” tour in the country.  Visit Churchill Downs, the Ali Museum and the Louisville Stoneware factory and eat at Lynn’s Paradise Café.
  7. Washington, D.C. – The Smithsonian Museums, International Spy Museum, National Zoo and Newseum are fun all year long.  Plan a visit during the National Cherry Blossom Festival or go to a Nationals game.

Richmond is about 343 miles from Pittsburgh, 304 miles from Atlantic City, 255 miles from Philadelphia and 100 miles from Washington, D.C.

If you visit or plan to visit any of these fun family destinations, feel free to leave a comment about your favorite attraction or destination.  Where would I go?  I have many childhood memories of the Pittsburgh Zoo and Kennywood Park (my first "real" roller coaster ride) and would love to brave the Duquesne Incline.  The International Spy Museum and Newseum are also at the top of my list, as well as anywhere that has a Ripley's Museum.  Now, where will you go?
