Abandoned hens find new homes in Santa Cruz

Last month, 50,000 hens were discovered starving to death after they were abandoned in a factory farm in Turlock. Over 4,000 were rescued and taken to Animal Place, a farmed animal sanctuary in Vacaville and Grass Valley.

After several weeks of fluids, food and loving care, the hens were ready for adoption. The Center for Animal Protection & Education (CAPE) in Scotts Valley, along with the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter, took dozens of these hens to assist in finding them new homes.

CAPE has been screening potential adopters, requiring them to email photos of their chicken coops and to confirm that the hens would live out their lives as companion animals rather than just for their egg laying ability.

This past weekend, 14 hens were adopted into new homes. For more information on how you can help the remaining hens visit CAPE or Animal Place.
