No one knows if Shadow's life before Superstorm Sandy was a good one. After reading this, you might agree that it wasn't the life of a beloved family member, who was happy and cared for by the people he loved.
Shadow, a 7-year-old pit bull, was left behind in his Staten Island, NY home to brave Hurricane Sandy on his own.
Scared and alone, he was crated in the dark for days. Although his home was destroyed - luckily he survived. It's obvious, however, that his survival wasn't important to his family.
Instead of being overjoyed to find him alive, and thrilled to be reunited with him, as he was with them, his owners who not only deserted him during the storm, then decided to end his life.
They chose to have him euthanized.
While in the doctor's office, his owner was overheard by two women, Maria and Judy, who convinced him instead to surrender Shadow to the Brooklyn ACC which was providing a 30-day hold for Sandy victims displaced by the storm.
So this unwanted boy was thankfully saved from destruction. He learned that he mattered, and people cared what happened to him, despite the fact that his former owners did not.
He was pulled by Fur Friends in Need in Hazlet, NJ and is now staying at Country Estate Kennels in Staten Island, where he is receiving lots of love and attention until he finds his new home.
He has been fully vetted, neutered, and is taking meds for a yeast infection, but has otherwise received a clean bill of health. He is receiving training, so that he will be prepared to become a cherished member of a wonderful foster or adoptive family.
Shadow is described as a smart, friendly boy who loves to snuggle, walks well on a leash, and appears to be house-trained. He would be best as the only pet, but can possibly live with a submissive dog. Due to his size and energy level, they are recommending a home with children over 10.
Luckily we are told dogs live in the moment, so the past to him is just that - the past. Now he can look forward to the happiness that he missed, and spend the rest of his life being loved and valued - never to be left behind again.
