ABA President responds to Sen. Barbara Boxer on law school data transparency

ABA President Stephen Zack recently responded to a March 2011 press release issued by United States Senator Barbara Boxer (D-California) regarding the transparency of law school data.

It appears that the ABA will be going the extra mile to insure that law schools are accurately reporting job related information to prospective law students.

In addition to other efforts to support transparency in job related reporting from law schools, the ABA is putting some elbow grease into this issue through its Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. Here, two committees are working on efforts that could result in changes for ABA approved law schools. These changes could require more detailed reporting to prospective law students in terms of employment statistics, salary information and the market for law jobs.

The back-story here is based on a March 2011 press release issued by Senator Boxer. In the release, Boxer calls on the American Bar Association to ensure accurate and transparent reporting by law schools throughout the country.

Where would a big political issue surrounding law schools be without some type of relationship to U.S. News law school rankings? Senator Boxer's release notes that, allegedly, some schools have not been forthright in reporting data in order to optimize U.S. News rankings and prospective and current law students, as a result, are feeling the pinch. Although Boxer understands that the ABA is working on the issue, the release notes that "more must be done."

Zack has been quoted saying that no one in the legal profession is more concerned about the future of the legal profession and the value of a legal education than he is.
