Aaron Swartz, one of the co-founders (he is considered to be one of the co-founders although he was not technically one) of the popular site Reddit.com passed away Friday at the age of 26. Swartz was found unconscious at his home at 9:30 a.m. Friday and later died. Law enforcement sources stated that Swartz died after hanging himself, but the medical examiner has yet to determine the cause of death.
Friends say Swartz was a “prolific intellectual” and a “kid at heart”. He reportedly helped draft an early version the RSS feed, which is how Reddit was able to promote popular headlines. Swartz was arrested in 2011 for felony hacking, with law enforcement claiming he downloaded millions of academic journals with intent to distribute. He had pleaded not guilty in September of 2012.
Swartz also co-founded Demand Progress, a site which fought hard to keep the Internet free from censorship using the Stop Online Piracy Act, SOPA. Sites like Reddit helped promote the largest online protest in history.
