Aaron’s Acres is inviting visitors to take a look at their recreational program Hiester Lanes on Friday, February 7, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. A monthly school-year program for teenagers and young adults with special needs is held both in Berks and Lancaster counties. According to their press release “Participants engage in age-appropriate social and recreational activities with peers while supervised by professional staff, including special education teachers, speech therapists, social workers, and psychologists”.

Fifteen years ago Aaron Acres stated as a summer program to provide youth and young adults ages 5-21with recreational programs during the summer. The organization started in Lancaster but has now expanded to other counties. The programs have also expanded as well. Typical activities include horseback riding, swimming, music therapy, and arts and crafts. In 2012, 209 children and young adults with special needs participated in camp across all three counties, and 80 are currently enrolled in the school-year program in two counties.

The participants also participate year-round by visiting community organizations that provide additional services. Teenagers also participate in community projects that introduce them to the community while giving back. The staff are friendly, care about those they serve and are more than willing to work with other community partners.
