Breaking report Feb. 6, 2013: Things just keep getting worse for the owners of "Sweet Cakes by Melissa" after Aaron Klein refused to sell a wedding cake to a lesbian couple -- and going as far as reportedly calling them "abominations." Yesterday it was revealed that the cake shop might have made some horribly unsettling statements regarding race on their wall before deleting the page on Facebook entirely. Today a new screenshot has surfaced and is going viral like the first.
Remember the news report of Aaron Klein saying that he personally doesn't hate gays, he just doesn't want to provide a cake for a wedding? Yeah, well it's been made apparent that Aaron Klein of "Sweet Cakes by Melissa" has a habit of making homophobic slurs, as well as slurs against other races. The screenshot above is of a post taken from Aaron Klein's wall that was made on December 27, 2012 -- before all of the madness surrounding his cake shop begain. It's since been removed and his profile photo changed, but the sentiment is not immortalized in the form of a screenshot. The image is of a comment he had made on a Politico article, which posted to his wall and this is what he said:
"Send him back to his socialist utopian gay rights loving homeland. And all the people that think like him can go too."
Now, it's not entirely clear who he was referring to in this hate-filled comment, but a search of Politico's archives from December 27, 2012 shows a lot of posts about President Barack Obama. So it seems as though this was a homophobic rant railed against liberals and President Obama, but why? Why does this guy exude so much negativity for a dessert baker? There are telltale signs of what may be behind this man's behavior against homosexuals and liberals, and these signs can be seen on his Facebook page. His 'likes' focus mainly on the NRA, Fox News and other ultra-conservative concepts. He also has a new profile photo -- him showing off a firearm. In the comments a friend of his says:
"LOL, just in case some lefties start gettin' ideas?"
The state of Oregon, where "Sweet Cakes by Melissa" operates, is a blue state with a melting pot population of LGBTQ members as well as those who are liberal voters and simply tolerant of same sex marriage and love in all of its forms. It needs to also be pointed out that this business is absolutely in violation of state laws that prohibit the discrimination against same sex couples. And that's a lot to do with there is a growing call to boycott the bakery. In fact a Facebook community titled 'Boycott Sweet Cakes by Melissa' growing by leaps and bounds with supporters who are absolutely disgusted by the behavior displayed by Aaron Klein on behalf of an establishment that should be joyful and romantic.
It's Aaron Klein's right to behave like this, but it's not his right to discriminate against the members of the public he sells commodities too. As a business owner in the state of Oregon he is expected to abide by the law, and he has violated it. Not only has he violated the law he has potentially ruined his business's image by being so hateful online with his public profiles.
