Aaron Glass and Friends bring back Love at SF's Boom Boom Room

With a surname like Glass, one can’t help but let their mind wander to those old Brit-rockers with noun last names:  Plant, Moon, Page—the list probably stops there, but you get the idea.  This time around, toss out the leather lace-up pants and the knobs that go to 11.  Last night at SF’s Boom Boom Room, Aaron Glass donned his signature ‘shagadelic’ cap to bring forth a whole new brand of wooded love-folk with his music troupe, Aaron Glass and Friends.

Song lyrics like ‘sweet sunshine’ and ‘beautiful day/smile for me’ would make it easy to toss Glass into a neo-hippie wagon headed for the playa.  Doing so, however, would be to negate love itself.  His love shaman garb and big bear grin are much too potent to send him dusting for alkaline.  His singing style is gentle and inviting. He picks his guitar with a soft fluidity that calms nerves (if the booze hasn’t already).  By and large a fitting title would be ‘Uber Crooner.’  Inviting your special someone to his next show will probably score you a run.

Glass’ music is a completely selfless experience that is as much about sending out love as it is bringing it in.  From song to song, a cast of friends, audience members and fellow musicians—some fitting in either one or all of these categories—came to and left the stage, all smiling and, dare I say, love-struck, by the abundance of good-vibe goo spilling from Glass’ aura.  Just imagine you’ve dosed plenty of MDMA, but that the heady and palpable connection to your fellow man doesn’t fade by the mechanics of your digestive tract.

An all out love-in, Glass’ Boom Boom Room performance communicated a mantra of space-bound love standards, and the crowd felt it.  Maybe it was because it was his birthday, or maybe it was because it was Fat Tuesday in SF's Fillmore District, but probably not.
