Aaliyah 35 is trending online, as the singer would have been 35 years-old today, but she was taken away too early in life in a tragic plane accident. Aaliyah was on the way back from the Bahamas after doing a video shoot when her plane went down, according to The Source on Jan. 16.
Aaliyah was only 22 when that plane went down and she was just at the start of a booming career. The American born singer’s hits of “Try Again,” “Are You That Somebody” and “Rock the Boat” are still played today.
Chris Brown, Drake, The Dream and Omarion have kept Aaliyah’s music alive by recording posthumous collaborations of her music.
The singer was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York to a mother who was a singer and influenced her baby girl to explore the world of music. Her first TV appearance was at 10-years-old singing “My Funny Valentine” on “Star Search.” Her aunt is the famous Gladys Knight, who she performed with.
As a teen her uncle signed her to his label, Blackground and Jive Records. She released “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number,” along with a few singles. It was when she signed with Atlantic Records her career took off.
After her third album was released in July of 2001, she was on her way back from shooting a music video for “Rock the Boat” in the Bahama’s when her plane crashed. That day was a dark day for music, August 25, 2001.
Happy 35th Birthday Aaliyah!
