During the 2013 AACC world conference in Nashville, TN, one of the world’s foremost Christian apologist, Dr. Ravi Zacharias delivered a passionate speech entitled: “The Uniqueness of Jesus in Times Like These.” The AACC compact disk title is: “Why Jesus?: Rediscovering His Truth in an Age of Mass Marketed Spirituality.” This motivating speech was given to more than 7,000 Christian counselors, and this author will attempt to provide a quick overview of Ravi’s address to these counselors. (For those interested, the compact-disk of Ravi’s speech can be purchased at the AACC web page.)
Ravi Zacharias has authored or co-authored more than 28 books. He has “spoken in over fifty countries and in numerous universities worldwide, notably Harvard and Princeton.” Even though Ravi states that C.S. Lewis “is probably the greatest Christian apologist in recent memory,” an inspection of his one of his books, Beyond Opinion Living the Faith We Defend, reveals a connection to Dr. Francis Schaeffer and Schaeffer’s teaching. Ravi, himself, however, is very unique in his apologetic as he, and his thoughts, are eastern philosophy.
As a side note, most Christians are aware that the majority of Biblical books are philosophically eastern – that is empirical; this would include most of what Christ himself spoke in the Gospels. Western, rational thought, is prevalent in the writings of Paul and the remaining books of the New Testament. It is rare, almost non-existent in fact, to find a respectable systematic or biblical theology with an eastern viewpoint.
The speech itself can be divided into three sections: the introduction, body, and conclusion. In Dr. Zacharias’ introduction he discussed how most of today’s mass marketing of Jesus presents a perverted Jesus which bears nothing in reality to the real Jesus. He then moved onto the body of his topic and explained that the real Jesus is the embodiment of truth - that is who Jesus was and who he claimed to be corresponded to reality. (There are two tests of truth: 1) the correspondence theory of truth and 2) the coherence theory of truth, and Jesus Christ demonstrated both).
Ravi gave the AACC counselors four examples of how Jesus corresponded to truth: 1) Jesus described the conditions of everyone’s heart in the most accurate of terms - sin, 2) Jesus provided a remedy for our malady – the gospel, 3) Jesus’ provides strength in our suffering, and 4) Jesus gives hope for us for beyond the grave. A deeper study of this class can be discovered in Dr. Ravi Zacharias’ book: Why Jesus? Rediscovering His Truth in an Age of Mass Marketed Spirituality.
