A24 and Kevin Smith debut poster for his new film ‘Tusk’

Throughout his career Kevin Smith has built his reputation on being outspoken and a major supporter for independent film and a master of witty hilarious dialogue. Add to the mix his geek love for comics and Star Wars and you have one of the most interesting filmmakers out there. With his previous film, the brilliant Red State, he dipped his toe into the world of horror and seems to have set him off on an all-new film career.

His next highly anticipated film ‘Tusk’ was spawned from a conversation on his recording of SModcast The Walrus and The Carpenter where as he and his longtime friend and producer Scott Mosier discussed a strange article about a homeowner offering a free living arrangement as long as they agree to dress as a walrus. As strange as that may sound it spawned an hour long episode of breaking the idea down and then putting it in the hands of his Twitter followers if they were interested in getting this film made.

Now a year later clearly they were all on board as the film has been shot and be released later this year with an impressive cast including Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman, Harley Morenstein and Johnny Depp rumored to appear. The film follows a podcaster and journalist Wallace Bryton who goes missing in the backwoods of Manitoba while interviewing a mysterious seafarer named Mr. Howe, sending his best friend and girlfriend to team up with an ex-cop to look for him.

Red State offered a new look at Smith’s film style and is easily one of his best films to date so its great to see that he is diving head first into this genre and bringing more of the insanity in his mind to the masses. While we still have to wait until later this year to check out ‘Tusk’ you can take a sneak peek at the poster here now.
