Last week, we examined Governor Rick Scott's defining moments in 2011. Let's take a look at some Florida Democrats who may join him in the Hall of Shame.
Kevin White
Kevin White of Tampa has an impressive résumé. In 2007, he attempted to spend campaign funds on tailed Italian suits. In 2009, he was found guilty of sexual harassment. In 2010, he lost a bid for re-election. The year of 2011 was his best year yet -- he was arrested on 10 charges, including bribery, conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, and lying to an FBI agent. In exchange for cash payments, he arranged for George Hondrellis's company, Tampa City Towing, to get a towing certificate and be placed in the Tampa Police Department and county Sheriff's Department towing rotations. Sheriff's officials also report that White attempted to use his authority to influence them to place Tampa City Towing in the rotation.
Debbie Wasserman-Schultz
Debbie Wasserman-Schultz has been garnering all kinds of media attention. She was named one of the top 10 most influential political newcomers in 2011 by usnews.com, describing her as "feisty." She may turn heads with her in-your-face demeanor, but she wins no awards for common sense. Take, for example, her comments on the economy. In September, she was quoted as saying "it's such baloney" that the stimulus didn't work, and that the economy was on an upswing. Only a week later, she stated on CBS that we need another stimulus to improve transportation. She has also appointed herself a crusader for women's abortion rights, claiming that it is "extreme and radical" to say that life begins at conception. When Congress voted to defund Planned Parenthood, she labeled all of those who voted against funding as "anti-woman," including 11 Democrats. When questioned about this curious accusation, she answered, "I don't think there are any Democrats." Logic dictates that only Republicans who vote against funding Planned Parenthood must be anti-woman in Wasserman-Schultz's book.
Alan Grayson
Alan Grayson, self-described as a Progressive and a proud supporter of ACORN, announced in July that he is running for Congress again. He has had his "special" moments in the political arena, such as calling a Federal lobbyist a "whore." He also aired an extremely derogatory TV advertisement about his political opponent Daniel Webster, calling him "Taliban Dan" and labeling him a religious fundamentalist, while misrepresenting his statements about Bible verses. (He lost the election.) Obviously a lover of controversy, he has even stopped as low as to attempt to have critic Angie Langley jailed for creating a satirical website, "mycongressmanisnuts.com," which parodies Grayson's own website, "congressmanwithguts.com." He requested that she be fined and jailed for five years because of her "utterly tasteless and juvenile" website name. This criticism is brought to you by the same man who calls federal lobbyists "whores" and likens Christian men to Islamic terrorists. He may not be nuts, but he is a bit of a hypocrite.
