Driving in or out of Astoria, you will notice a sign for Clatsop Community College’s MERTS Campus. MERTS is an acronym for
Marine and Environment Research Training Station. MERTS provides education and training in the Maritime Sciences and is doing research in coastal and environmental studies, scientific research training, and industrial technologies. The MERTS campus is located at South Tongue Point, four miles east of Astoria off of Highway 30. A comprehensive marine and environmental technology center, MERTS is located at the mouth of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest. MERTS offers a number of training programs, including: Global Marine Distress Safety Systems, Basic Safety Training, and USCG Licensing Courses.
