Stratford Richardson YMCA seniors’ 2011 Annual Christmas party’s theme , preparing for a season of opportunity in 2012, embrace positive change, pray daily and serve others” coincided with the mission of the YMCA, “To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The Y’s Active Older Adults celebrated the holiday season and their accomplishments, last Thursday, at the West Blvd. facility, with a luncheon, gift exchange, contests, recognitions and plenty of dancing.
“It’s always beautiful for everybody to come together and celebrate. The AOA planned this event, the menu, they set the budget, decorated and I’m just so proud of their accomplishments. The economy forced the seniors to fund their own party this year. This program helps with idle time, keeps their minds active, provides interaction and needed fun,” said Anthony Walters, Strafford Richardson Y executive director.
The seniors, staff and guests, sharply donned in Christmas Red, had a ball conversing, laughing and their favorite pastime, line dancing. DJ Johnny Honeycutt brought back memories with songs from the 1930’s through the 1960’s and the crowd sang along. Doris Black, Black’s Catering, fed the party with baked chicken, turkey, stuffing, rice, macaroni and cheese, green beans, a healthy salad and peach cobbler. Johnnies Apparel, Baskets by Sylvia, CVS pharmacy, Samaritan’s Purse and Mary Kay cosmetics donated gifts and prizes. Ms. Brenda transformed the gym into a warm Christmas family living room. “I am the black Martha Stewart, you know,” said Ms. Brenda.
Jeff Bishop, membership director for four days, said the seniors have been singing all week in the lobby. The Y is family oriented with programs for the young, teens, boomers and older adults. “Another vision for this Y is to uplift this center and the whole community.”
“The AOA is so wonderful for all of us. It gets me out of the house and keeps me young,” said Louise Freeman, AOA member.
“I love my seniors and I am so excited for what they have done with this party,” said Pat Love, AOA director. “But, remember this is a season of opportunity. Imagine what a wasted opportunity it would be having celebrated with good food and gifts but without growing closer to God.”
Johnnie Holmes, AOA member, Dr. Pierre Crawford, Center Baptist Church, Gastonia and Minister Mary Caldwell, Matthew 25:36 Ministries led the prayers.
