A writer's 2014 birthday wish to save dogs

See also

In keeping with tradition, this writer's birthday brings with it a list of Birthday Dogs. These are dogs that will hopefully get some additional exposure and find their forever homes by the "big day". It is all this writer asks for each birthday. The list is usually published a month prior, but this year's list is out late for a number of reasons, thereby extending the target date for adoptions for one month, to August 13 (although until they are all home, they will be promoted here). If you are considering adopting a dog, please look into one of these very deserving dogs. Each of them has so much to offer to someone who would take a chance on saving a life.

Brooklyn is a little thing, about 4 years old. She is a sensitive soul and starting to deteriorate at the shelter. Brooklyn is a bit shy at first, but warms up when you show her a little love. This sweet girl knows some commands and is eager to please. Brooklyn really needs out of the shelter sooner than later. Please call Bridgeport Animal Control at (203) 576-7727 to find out more or to meet Brooklyn.

According to the Yonkers Animal Shelter, Diesel spent 10 years in the same home. He is not adjusting well to life behind bars. To make matters worse, Diesel had a housemate, a Dachshund, who he seems to be searching for. It is presumed that the family kept the little dog while treating Diesel like so much garbage. Diesel has had no interest in playing and little interest in eating. This poor boy needs to find a new place to call home to lift his spirits and make his life feel worth living again. If you can give Diesel his place in the sun, please call (201) 981-3215 or email lesliem147@gmail.com.

Nilla has been at the New Haven Animal Shelter for almost a year. She is 3 years old and sweet as they come. Playful and energetic, Nilla knows several commands. She likes some dogs, but not cats. She is now considered urgent, so there is no time to waste if you can help Nilla.

Kerry is also at the New Haven Animal Shelter and on the urgent list. She is currently being kept in a more quiet area of the shelter because she is physically deteriorating in the more hectic environment. Ordinarily happy and active, Kerry is a young girl who could use some training to help her to be the best she can be.

Anura is another urgent dog in New Haven. She has been at the shelter almost as long as Nilla. At 8 years old, Anura is laid back and enjoys snuggling and being loved. This happy, affectionate senior deserves for the rest of her life to be the best of her life. Anura gets along with some dogs and would be best suited to a home without small children as they prove to be a bit much for her.

To find out more about Nilla, Kerry or Anura, please call the New Haven Animal Shelter at (203) 946-8110.

Lucky is no stranger to this column, having been written about here before. This handsome boy has been bounced around a bit in his six years. Lucky needs a stable home with an understanding, strong leader who will set boundaries and teach this very smart boy the ways of the world. Lucky must be the only pet in the home. For more information about Lucky, please email jager6303@yahoo.com.

**KERRY HAS BEEN ADOPTED!**
