How do you do it all? A working mom hears that question all the time. You are raising children, handling your housework with ease, everyone eats at least two healthy meals a day and the laundry is clean. How do you do it? How do you cram everything you need to do into one action packed day? The answer is you don’t.
If you are going to spend time with your family on the weekends, and not spend it shopping at the grocery store or doing all the laundry, you are going to have to get creative girl! The weekends are for relaxing with the family, listening to your kids talk to each other and you, attending football, basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey, ice-skating, dance, cheerleading games, practice, competitions, etc. Women who want it all are going to have to work for it. There will be no time for laundry, dishes, dusting, vacuuming, shopping, etc.
Easy peasy weekday dinners must be first amongst your list of things to do. In addition, there will be no dining out every night of the week. It is hard on the budget and the belly. What is the point of working if you are going to eat your income in a drive thru? Simple recipes do exist online, in cookbooks and those wonderful women’s magazines that pocket the checkouts at the grocery stores. Sometimes a quick dinner can consist of tossed salad, fried chicken from the grocery store deli (which is healthier than the boxed frozen and reheated kind) and homemade biscuits. You are covering all the health basics there and dinner can be ready in less than thirty minutes.
The laundry monster exists in every house and can be found under beds, in closets, on floors and, if you have small children, in couch cushions. Do not waste an entire Saturday or Sunday washing clothes. Please do not do it. Give yourself fifteen extra minutes in the morning to throw a load into the washer. Before you are ready to walk out of the door for the day, you should be able to swap out that load and start a second load. Just make sure these are not delicate loads. You do not want wrinkles in everything. Wash your towels or sheets or socks in those first two loads and you are ahead of the game. When you get home, sacrifice two more loads to the laundry monster, these ones can be delicate, because you will be home to rescue them from the wrinkle fairy.
Finally, keeping your house clean can be rough when you are on the go all the time. The best option here is to either hire an inexpensive house cleaner service that can do the heavy duty cleaning or learn how to spot clean in the middle of the week. This is great if you have older children who can vacuum or load and unload the dishwasher for you after they have done their homework. This is why chores were invented. Giving them some sort of household responsibility is a good launch pad for money management.
