"Elections belong to the people. It's their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters."
— Abraham Lincoln
People say the issues and candidates up for a vote on Tuesday, November 5 are a big snooze, but the election still offers a worthwhile opportunity to participate in direct democracy. And some of the propositions are even real-estate related!
There are four offices up for election and four propositions. Three of the four offices - Assessor, Treasurer and District Attorney have candidates running unopposed. Assessor Carmen Chiu has the most relevance to the Buzz because she's the one you plead your case to when you want your property taxes reduced due to declining values. If you want to see what a person with that much power looks like, here's a picture: www.carmenchu.org.
The fourth office is our District 4 (Outer Sunset) Supervisor – which has the current Supe, Katy Tang, pitted against Ivan Seredni, who is a Vietnam Vet, accountant, and disgruntled MUNI rider (he decided to run after a bad day on public transit).
Two of the propositions are about a relatively small residential development project at 8 Washington-- which has the San Francisco Tennis Club beside themselves (they lose their courts) and the immediate neighbors up in arms (they lose their views). San Francisco Magazine offers an entertaining guide on how to vote on this one that offers some good fits and giggles.
The SF Elections web page on www.sfgov.org also has a bunch of interesting and even useful links: You can find your polling place, download the Voter's Guide and even watch a live video feed (when the time comes) of city employees counting the mailed in ballots. Don't you love where your tax dollars go?
