Jack Pevenstein had not seen his students for 45 years. That is until recently when the Jeremy Bloom’s Wish of a Lifetime granted his wish to travel to Washington, D.C. to reconnect with his former students, who are now about 56 years old.
Pevenstein said he heard Brookdale Senior Living retirement community in Chicago was sponsoring Jeremy Bloom’s Wish of a Lifetime and thought it would be a ‘treat’ for him and his former students to see each other again. Pevenstein taught fifth grade at Thomas Addison Elementary.
According to Pevenstein, he was able to reconnect with 15 students, where he realized how he had an influence on his former students’ lives.
“Connecting with them as mature adults was like seeing old friends after many years,” he said.
He said they talked about their families and children as well as memories of the classroom and their experiences.
“The best part of the experience was to see the tangible impact I had on their lives and to be remembered,” Pevenstein said.
