Hennepin Theatre Trust unveiled their full six-show bill for the 2010-2011 season this week featuring the third appearance of the hit Oz-spinoff Wicked, a holiday run of Billy Elliot the Musical, and shorter engagements include, Shrek the Musical, Rock of Ages, Jersey Boys, and the revival tours of Hair and West Side Story.
For the few out there who have yet to see Wicked, this could likely be your year. The show is appearing for an epic six week run at the Orpheum, playing August 11 through September 19. Heck, most movies don’t even survive in the theater that long. Also, if you absolutely can’t wait for the special on-sale event on May 24, you can book your tickets now by donating $150 to the Hennepin Theater Trust or by becoming a subscriber (subscriptions go on sale Tuesday, April 13). Good luck Oz fans!
And though we must say goodbye to the yellow brick road in September, the music of Elton John will still have a place on the stage for the Minnesota debut of Billy Elliot the Musical, playing from December 16 through January 9. And yes, it is based on the movie, which I have not seen. However, if being the winner of 10 Tony awards is any indication of success, it will likely be an invigorating experience.
But before little Billy’s dancin’ feet hit the stage, the Orpheum will be rocked out by not one, not two, but three 80s rock band tributes in the new musical Rock of Ages, playing Octobert 19-24. This amped out show features the power-chord hits of Journey, Styx, and REO Speedwagon. If anything, I’ll be extremely excited to people-watch at this one. I’ll keep you posted on the number of spandex-pants spottings.
Then, next on the season bill, like Spamalot without Tim Curry, will Shrek the Musical without Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy have any hopes of comparable entertainment value? I suppose there’s only one way to find out. Shrek the Musical will make a decidedly short and safe run at the Orpheum from February 1-6.
As for the rest of Spring 2011, Hair, Jersey Boys, and West Side Story, I am absolutely giddy and I hope you are too. It’s a theater nerd’s fantasy line-up. Heck, I may show up in costume for all three. Watch for me, I’ll be the one in flowered bell-bottoms and a wig down to my cork platform sandals (flashing you the peace sign of course!). Hair runs March 1-6, Jersey Boys runs April 21-May 8, and West Side Story finishes out the season July12-17.
As always, happy theater-going!
