In 1957, when Dr. Seuss first published his book "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," he delighted young readers with the story of how the Grinch, who lived high up on Mount Crumpet, set out with his dog Max to stop Christmas from coming to the Whos who lived down in Whoville.
The original animated version of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas first aired in 1966, and nearly half a century later, the story remains a timeless tale of Christmas miracles.
At Northside Christian Church in York County, Seuss' beloved characters are once again telling the story on three consecutive Sundays which began December 4.
The elaborate production series entitled "A Whoville Christmas" retells the story of the Grinch and the Whos in a grand, colorful and fun way.
The production is possible through the creativity of Director JoEllen Anklam, Northside's Minister of Worship and Arts Shawn Cartwright, a team of talented story developers, a set designer and dozens of construction volunteers, voice and acting talents, and a couple of hundred volunteers.
According to Anklam, more than 2,000 people attended Northside on the first Sunday of the series, which included music performed by the worship team as well as the church chorus and a special appearance during the show by Whoville's very own "Who-premes."
On Sunday, December 11, the emphasis of Whoville will be the "Whoville Hearts for Our Troops." In conjunction with the series, Northside's mission is to send care packages to local service members who will be deployed during Christmas. For those who might have missed the first Sunday, Anklam assures that each week's episode tells a different part of the story and is self-contained and easily understood. Service times are 9:00 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Despite the familiarity of the story of the Grinch and the Whos, one thing is certain after experiencing the first episode of A Whoville Christmas - you will be wondering, once again if the Grinch will discover that maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.
