The coming week in Las Vegas brings both events from the independent arts and fashion communities as well as a pageant to crown the new Mrs. Nevada America and her princesses. The week offers opportunities for those who want entertainment which goes beyond the slick commercial offerings of the strip, or who want to contribute to local charities in a fun, creative way.
The weekend kicks off early on Thursday, February 23rd with the return of RAW Las Vegas, this time at a new venue: The Royal House, a boutique hotel and showroom at 99 Convention Center Drive, http://royalhouselv.com/ The event will include RAW’s customary eclectic mix of bands, art exhibitions, a short film screening and, for fans of fashion and fashion modeling, runway shows produced by two local design houses: Scarlett Ginger and Green Tease. https://www.facebook.com/JrockScarlettGinger?sk=info and https://www.facebook.com/Grtease Tickets are available from the designers, if you are on facebook, or online for $10 at http://www.rawartists.org/lasvegas/activate The show begins at 8:00 PM.
Saturday, February 25th marks the first of the “full up” IndieKrush fashion shows at The Beauty Bar, http://thebeautybar.com/las_vegas/ In addition to their usual lineup of local indie bands and DJ, they will also have performance art, including a live body painting exhibition by Rob Hester http://thebeautybar.com/las_vegas/calendar/calendar.php?mode=view&id=699... The centerpiece of the event is the fashion show, featuring two designers: MzMina Kahn and Jani Love of Suzy Sin Studio. Jani’s show will be unusual in that she is a jewelry and accessory designer, so her creations will be shown off by models who have been body painted by Rob Hester. The club opens at 9:00 to the general public, and admission is free, although donations are welcome.
The weekend ends with a change of pace: the annual Mrs. Nevada America pageant and the associated Princess pageants at the showroom of the Suncoast Hotel and Casino http://www.suncoastcasino.com/ . The Nevada Princess Pageant, starting at 2 p.m., includes divisions of Little Miss, ages 4 to 6; Young Miss, ages 7 to 9; Pre-Teen, ages 10 to 12; and Teen, ages 13 to 16. In each division, entrants will compete in the categories of evening gown, on-stage introduction and interview with the judges. At 7 PM the Mrs. pageant begins, with 10 contestants vying to win the crown currently held by Amanda Kouretas, the 2011 Mrs. Nevada America winner. Charities of the contestants’ choices will be supported by donations to the People’s Choice awards http://www.mrsnevadaamerica.com/delegates.htm Tickets to the event are available to the public through the Suncoast box office in person, or by calling 702.636.7075.
