The Super Bowl is over for football, but the Super Bowl for dogs is next week. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is the second oldest sporting event in the U.S. Unfortunately, it never seems to get the coverage it deserves. If you are fortunate enough to have USA Network and CNBC, you can watch the two nights of the dog show next Monday and Tuesday starting at pm MST. You can watch the first half of the dog show on USA and then switch over to CNBC to watch the rest of the results for the night. More than 2,000 dogs will participate in the two day event.
If you don’t have cable, you can watch the judging delayed, online at www.westminsterkennelclub.org. The kennel club does a fantastic job with this website. You can watch your favorite breed being judged and see the names of the winners as well. It’s loaded with information. If you have a friend that is showing, you can check on the Judging Schedule to see when they will be showing and usually within an hour or so of the judging, they will have video up showing each class. Even if you are thinking about a pure-bred dog, they have a great breed selector site and links to all of the breed clubs.
If the Westminster Kennel Club piques your interest, the Rocky Mountain Cluster Dog show will be holding their huge show at the National Western Complex the following weekend on February 17th through the 20th. Many of the dogs you will see at Westminster will be at the Cluster shows that weekend. The kennel club is also hosting obedience and agility trials as well, so visitors will have the opportunity to see dogs of all shapes, sizes and talents. The Denver shows next week will also host the most doggy vendors of the year. It is a perfect time to pick up that hard-to-find doggy item you’ve been looking for.
If you are a dog fan, next week is your week. It doesn’t get any better than the Westminster Kennel Club on TV and then seeing a dog show in person at the Colorado Kennel Club Dog Shows. I hope to see you there!
