Our last day. Time to leave paradise. But before we left, the Galaxy still had a few treats in store for us!
Our first stop of the day was the San Cristobal Interpretation Center, where we learned the history of the Galapagos Islands. Through a very interesting and complete display, we walked through the history of the area from the beginning of time to the present. We learned how the islands were formed from the hot spot deep within the earth, about the beginnings of human habitation, and what is happening today.
Once through there, we had a choice – hang out in San Cristobal (the 2nd largest town in the Galapagos) so take a hike on Frigatebird Hill. We chose the hike. The path meandered around the island, giving us spectacular views of the coastline. We also passed the spot where Charles Darwin landed in 1835 – and enjoyed a few minutes playing on the massive statue of him they have erected at the spot.
But all good things must come to an end, and so, too, did our journey to the Galapagos Islands. We sadly headed off to the airport, knowing that none of us will ever forget the lessons we learned. Natural selection will never again be just a dry topic from my high school biology books!
